About Amiad

Ami'ad  is a kibbutz in the  northern part of Israel
located between three different regions:  the Upper Galilee, the Sea of Galilee and the Golan Heights

The founders of Amiad were sent here in 1946 by the Plmach,  to guard and protect the road  to
Tiberias from hostile attacks by arab mobs

They initially settled on a hill  two kilometres south
of the modern Ami'ad, naming their settlement Jubb Yosef after the nearby ruins.
Later moved to the current site, near the road, and changed the name of the kibbutz to Hahoshlim. Alas, later on the Jewish Agency decided that Amiad will be the official name  of
the place

A short history of Amiad - written by Barry Coleman

Founders' countries of origin
The foundersws group was combined from young Israelis and new immigrants coming  from Europe after the second world war. In 1948 arrived gorup of young people coming from Holland, followed by a group of Habonim Dror members from England, who made Aliya a few years later. In the late 60's a few groups of Israeli youth movements graduates came to live in Amiad, as part of their army service, many of them chose to stay and live in the kibbutz later on. Since then many others have joined both from Israel and the rest of the world

And what is a kibbutz ( lit. "gathering, clustering"; plural  kibbutzim)? It is a collective community that was traditionally based on agriculture. Today, farming has been partly supplanted by other economic branches, including industrial plants and high-tech enterprises. The  Kibbutzim began as utopian communities combining socialism and Zionism. In the last decades, most Kibbutzim have privatized and no longer practice communal living. Less than five percent of Israelis live on kibbutzim. A member of a Kibbutz is called a Kibbutznik
